A Duck’s Life

It’s fair to say that there are not many digital citizenship (written in 2018) books suitable for year 1s/kindergarteners. So DigiDuck makes quite a splash in this area; even though it has been out since 2012! This book attempts to inform the user to think twice before making sharing images online. There are quite a few more digital citizenship books available, be sure to check them out here.

A Duck’s Dilemma

Digiduck finds himself with some free time which he chooses to spend browsing his favorite website, as ducks do these days. Soon he receives, via email, a rather embarrassing photo of one of his pals from school. He then faces a dilemma about whether or not he should send it to the rest of his friends for a laugh. Then ensues a Charles Dickensesque character warning him about making the right choices for the future…

Digital Citizenship Links

I feel that book hits a few good points regarding digital citizenship, most importantly the sharing of images that could potentially hurt someone else. It brings home the reality of the consequences of our actions when going online. And it does so in an offline format, with a simple storyline and cute illustrations.

Where to buy it and how to use it?

You can buy it Childnet’s online store or you can download a free PDF version, or you can install it as an app. I downloaded the PDF onto a class set of iPads and read it through with my K and Grade 1 classes. Posing suitable questions throughout, with a follow up lesson with the Year 2s about emails and attachments.
